We already knew mobile was gaining more and more popularity. Now the moment has come that mobile really can’t be ignored. Already 52,5% of all the internet traffic is coming from mobile devices1. To be visible by search engines like Google, and for the best user experience, it is more important than ever to have a functional and fast mobile website. Where do you need to focus on?

 

Speed

Being fast online was always relevant, and it still stays that way. Research of Think With Google2 shows that 53% of all users abandon a website when loading takes longer than 3 seconds. And users only spend 2 to 3 minutes on a website3. The newest update of Google Pagespeed (an algorithm of Google used to score your website by its speed) also has a significant impact on mobile sites. So it is crucial to focus on mobile speed!

 

Above the fold

Online users want to find the things they’re looking for as quickly as they possibly can. Above the fold content, the content someone sees without scrolling is crucial! Not only online users, Google too wants your website to load only the content seen at that very moment. Make sure your above the fold content is worthy and shows clear call to action buttons, so visitors of your website can quickly complete tasks relevant to your business. This content has to be loaded first, while the other content loads in the background.

 

AMP

If you want your website to load even faster, you can also use Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP). This is a ‘simple’ version of your website, so your site is loaded faster and more mobile-friendly. These AMP pages are shown in Google searches so that the searching internet users can find their information even faster.

 

The multipurpose possibilities of a phone

Phones are no longer only being used for visiting websites, calling, or messaging. More often, you see phones used as a wallet or virtual (voice)assistant. Not only is the phone used as a physical wallet, but payments in webshops are also made more and more by using the phone. Nowadays, almost 60% of all e-commerce is via mobile4. This is a vast difference compared to 2013. In that year, we wrote an article about mobile trends too, and numbers showed not even 20% of all smartphone users made a payment via mobile. The trust we have in our phones has grown a lot! So if you have a webshop, make sure it’s visible online and mobile-friendly. Native app vs. web app

Native apps are apps installed from an app store, like Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Webapps are like websites that function well on every device and browser. The functions of native apps and web apps are starting to look more and more like each other. Google already shows native apps in its searches on mobile!

Still, we noticed that native apps are used more and more for specific goals. So we expect that the gap between native and web apps becomes bigger. Take a look at marketing automation software HubSpot, for example. The web app shows all the functions you expect of this software, whereas the native app only shows dashboards and statistics.
